Lightweight and fast.
Lightweight and fast.
I can’t believe I’ve only just discovered this e-mail app which has managed to change my mind that e-mail should (along with most snail mail) be relegated to the dust-bins of history and all within a mere 24 hour period. Now I love Slack and apps like it (Hipchat), but Unibox truly revives and renews what e-mail can be. What happened in those 24 hours? Here’s my story... I started off with the free iPhone version of Unibox and within 10-15 minutes, had completely cleaned up my primary personal Gmail account. The interface was beautiful along with the fluid swiping interactions. I was hooked. The super power move feature for me is the ability to swipe all e-mails from a particular sender (newsletter, junk mail, phone service provided, etc) - appearing as a single line item in your Unibox inbox - and send them all to “archive”, “trash” or “junk” in the blink of an eye (I tend to send the personal to archive and junk to junk or trash). I proceeded to buy the pro-iPhone app and add my other two Gmail accounts to the app. Another 20 minutes or so and these were also cleaned up leaving only a few actionable e-mails in the one-stop Unibox inbox. NOTE: I’m using the app with the zero inbox mode/approach here. Finally, I decided I loved the experience enough to get it on my mac as well. And then I did the crazy thing… I took the leap and added the pre-gmail e-mail address I’ve had since high school (since 1998!) to my Unibox along with it’s 100’s if not a couple thousand e-mails in the inbox going back to at least 2008 (7 years worth of e-mails!). Within another hour or two, I archived/deleted/junked ALL 7-years worth of e-mails there (100’s to 1000’s of e-mails) and managed to unsubscribe from 20 or so newsletters in the process. I went to bed with my Unibox inbox, which shows the inbox content of all four of my e-mail address (2 personal, 2 business) has a mere total of 8 items in it, all actionable! It’s pretty friggin beautiful if you know what I mean. Simply put, I love this app and enthusiastically can’t wait to get my friends and family using it to escape the e-mail as it’s always been catastrophe. Unibox demonstrates the future of e-mail at it’s best. Period.
Ive been using Unibox since beta. Tremendous app - best experience out of all OS X clients that Ive used (and I think Ive probably used just about every email client known for OS X, including `mutt`, `pine`, etc. :) ) I would like to see the message composition mode bolstered a bit and I have a few other minor requests (including a DARK mode) in to the developers, but this client certainly has delivered the best experience Ive had in email management.
It’s like a picasso painting. I can’t tell where anything is. It’s confusing and honestly very slow to receive messages.
If this app had a email blocking, junk filter in it, then it would be great. It makes it very hard to use when you have a million junk emails coming in and you CAN’T do anything about it. Almost ready for prime time
I went looking for alternate email apps because the native Apple Mail app consumes so much CPU with my IMAP account. I got the 15 day free trial for Unibox based on all the positive reviews and used it exclusively for several days. It’s easy on system resources, works perfectly with my IMAP account, and seems to integrate reasonably well with the Mac ecosystem. Getting used to the contact-centric view does take a little adjustment, but once you get used to it, it feels efficient and natural. Based on what I’ve experienced so far, Unibox seems like a great option.
Complete waste of money. Confusing. Would request a refund if it was an option.
Using this on an Apple iMac and with Google Gmail accounts. I am an experienced computer user. Just got the program today and its exactly how it is described. Its fast. Setup was a complete breeze - which is saying something in and of itself. It groups emails just how I need them. Straight forward and easy to understand. I had the concept and functions down in just a few minutes. I love the group layout that puts all emails together under the person’s name. It has lots of filters to focus on what you are looking for, and an attachment list as well for everything you sent or received from the person you are looking at. That’s pretty useful for me in particular because it gives me a quick look function to see if I sent a file to a client. I am still new to the app, so more will follow. I do see that some of the complaints I read either just were not problems or apparently had been corrected/changed. So far is a pretty good experience.
Would have been nice to have the ability to use Exchange. I do not have the ability to retrieve exchange via IMAP.
Unibox is quite good. I use both the Mac Mail and Unibox depending on how I want my mail sorted. I do have one serious (for me) complaint. With the latest change (I believe) the app will no longer allow me to use a custom signature. It continues to revert to “Sent with Unibox) even though I have a custom signature installed and selected. This is a major fault with the app causing me to use it far less than in the past. I have emailed the developer with no response.
I have been using Unibox for over a year and it is by far my favorite email client. When I am looking for an old email I usually find it based on who sent it to me. This is easy to do because Unibox groups everything by sender. I archive things from sends I rarely get mail from and my frequently contacted users have all their emails in one stack so I can find them quickly. The menus are well organized and it works extremely well. If I had one complaint It would be that I wish you could customize some of the icons or selections.
This app needs a better search function. I have been using it happily to read, write and sort emails, but I have to go to Gmail or Mac Mail to get decent thorough search results.
This is a nice clean mail app. The way Unibox displays the inbox by sender is unique and helps you to quickly get on top of your inbox. What’s missing: it should make use of gestures to archive, delete, etc., and add the option to display an entire message without the “more” link.
For me and my workflow, this is the best solution to email I’ve seen. Once you wrap your head around the way it works, it’s amazing how fast you can sail through your email. I was able to go from about 200 emails to inbox zero in about 5 minutes. Focusing on the sender makes all the difference. If I know I can delete/archive all the inbox messages from Sender A, it’s a simple keyboard shortcut to get rid of them. The other extras like dedicated attachments view and the filters are nice, but an added touch is all the visual beauty of the app. The inline composer window is something that all email apps should adopt. If workflow and UX are high on your list, you need to check out this great email client.
Uniboxs big selling point is a simple but useful hook: your email is arranged by Sender by Date -- that is, more like how text messages are displayed in Apples Messages. Its easy to set up, attractive, and arguably fun to use. I found myself burning through a full mailbox quickly and cleanly. The use of icons/avatars makes quick viewing mail simple. The only things I find wrong with it may be simply ignorance on my part, or how Ive used email in the past. I have scores of folders saved on my IMAP iCloud account; though I can access them via Unibox, I cant seem to search them (for that, I either need to launch Mail itself; cant even do that via iCloud). Again, though, this could be my lack of understanding of the apps workings; Im not seeing anything about that at eightloops website/FAQ. Id also like to see the company, eightloops, implement a User Forum so buyers of the app can help each other throught the process of setup and use of the app, as well as give us a voice in requesting new features.
One of the biggest things with all clients is RULES. This has no rules at all and no way to change the notification to a custom one or even when it checks the mail. I do however prefer it over just based off the grouping of people. This defiently works for me because I sorta mail and airmac by user and then the subject. This can be tweaked here and there but the biggest is the rules. Thats really the only thing missing. I had to give up using them as much as I like the interface, there isnt much config
This app definitely has its pros and cons but I have to admit it is really growing on me. Adding accounts is easy, it searches out all the email server settings on its own. Why all email programs don’t do this I don’t know! It makes so much sense. One thing this app lacks it that it’s impossible to save or export an email as text. I like to save certain emails as text to Dropbox for handy access later. Not possible with this program - yet, the programmers have promised this is coming. The one thing I really like about this program is the unified inbox, they call it the Unibox, and it groups emails by sender (not just be thread). It makes is really easy to, for instance, throw into the trash all those bank notifications that I no longer need, or anything of that sort, without having to search for them. This app puts them all right there, together for you. I don’t think words can do justice to just how good this really is. I am shocked no one has done it before. I look forward to the developers adding the “missing” items (like save to text) without ruining a terrific concept. If you deal with a lot of email and several accounts, as I do, this app is definitely worth the money. UPDATE: I have been using this app for a while now and I changed the rating from 4 to 5 stars. It’s that good. Apple’s Mail program is too buggy for me since the Yosemite version and Outlook seems like it was built for Windows 95 (it’s a hideous mess). Anyway, if you like simplicity, elegance and effectiveness in one package, this is it. UPDATE AGAIN: Still good, still my preferred email client. Flat out, this is the best experience for email.
It’s a cliche to say that an app changed you life, but in this case Unibox did — actually more like it restored to me hour of my life. I have some old email accounts that I have to keep for busines purposes but that are the target of spam & despite spam assassin & other software, spam gets through… to the tune of several emails a day. With Unibox, I find that I am spending much much less time going through & sort the wheat from the chaff. The gravatars on the list are very helpful too… it’s a great visual queue from important people. And, of course, having all a person’s messages grouped makes it a lot easier to make sure you attend to the important ones. I’ve also found their tech support to be very very quick, courteous & thorough. Is it perfect? No. I’d like multiple windows. It’s like font support. I’d like to have my messages cleared regularly on a schedule from the server like Apple Mail does rather than on the trash & only when I empty the trash. But from my experience with the Unibox team so far, I expect to see these changes in upcoming versions. It’s hard to lay down cold hard cash for an email client, but in this case it was well worth it to me. And they give you a nice 30 day trial so you can see if it works for you. Oh, also, set up for multiple emails accounts on multiple servers was a snap & the iPhone app rocks as well. Well worth downloading & giving it a try if you have emal frustrations.
:( Full support coming over IMAP?
This is new review, the old is kept below. I erased this app some time ago, but restore it recently. This app has few features that make it hard not to use even as a supplement to Apple Mail. - you can see all the attachements in correspondence with a particular person. This is great and I am using it constantly. I managed to find some files I was thinking missing. Apple should implement it ASAP. - you can filter the corerespondence from your contacts only - great if you are getting lots of junk emails. - organizing in groups and can see all the emails even if the person has multiple accounts. I still use Apple Mail, it might be a little frustrating to use two clients but it worth the trouble. Message to the Unibox team: please equlize Unibox with Apple Mail adding some missing features. Better search etc. I have been checking different mail apps to replace the native Apple Mail for a while and this is the first app that really attracted me. I gave it a try and few weeks after the 15 days period of testing got expired I realized that something is missing in my dayly routine. So I spent my $18 and bought the Unibox. What is really good: - the idea of grouping by contact is great. Actually Apple has an attempt of grouping the threads, but it is half baked. This app works just great. You have the overall view of all the activity and can open the particular thread with a click - very convenient. Basically no need for search mostly. - everything is in one window. Not sure it is very useful on big screen, but on notebook it is great. It takes a little to get used to it, as well as to the fact that long emails are not shown in full but with time you got use to it and I pesonally like it. - filters - with new messages filter the Unibox essencially becomes a clear Inbox. Switching is fast and easy. - the attachement view - you can see all the attachment related to a contact in one single place. I actually found some files that I was thinking missing. - esthetically the app is very pleasant. What can be made better: - first of all the general remark: all Mail can do Unibox should do as well, than the transition to Unibox will be comfortable to everyone, - the most important for me: when sending to group see the whole group in unibox, not individuals. I am frequently send messages to large groups of my co-workers so seeing all the recipients in the Unibox sort of kill the main idea of the app, - default fonts, Rich Text per default, not too crucial, but good to have, - multiple signature. I use the same email for both personal and business use, need different signatures, - undo message delete (CTRL-Z) - new message button in the body of the viewer is misleading, you can get used to it but I still try to push it when I need to start with clean new message, though the idea of starting a new thread with particular person instead of replying seems to be useful, - ability of delete or reply from the notification pop-up window, it helps fighting spam without switching from the app you are currently using, it is implemented in Apple Mail and personally I use this option very frequently. -to open or preview the attachment one should click on the name, clicking on the icon does not work -cannot select the attachment using Ctrl key. Only using the Shift key to select all, so I cannot safe some particular subset of messages (or did not find how to do this). Again, it is just the first update and I expect the program will become better with any new update. My list is not a “con list”, just suggestion to the developers how to make the app better. At the same time it is very useful even as it is now. I basically switched from using the Apple Mail almost completely. After few months of using it: - please improve the search to the level of native Mail, - data, contact, map address recognition in the text and communication with corresponding program. I am missing this features in Unibox that I got used in Mail. I have to switch to Mail if I need it and it makes Unibox not a universal mail client.
