First good alternative to Apple Mail
This is new review, the old is kept below.
I erased this app some time ago, but restore it recently. This app has few features that make it hard not to use even as a supplement to Apple Mail.
- you can see all the attachements in correspondence with a particular person. This is great and I am using it constantly. I managed to find some files I was thinking missing. Apple should implement it ASAP.
- you can filter the corerespondence from your contacts only - great if you are getting lots of junk emails.
- organizing in groups and can see all the emails even if the person has multiple accounts.
I still use Apple Mail, it might be a little frustrating to use two clients but it worth the trouble.
Message to the Unibox team: please equlize Unibox with Apple Mail adding some missing features. Better search etc.
I have been checking different mail apps to replace the native Apple Mail for a while and this is the first app that really attracted me. I gave it a try and few weeks after the 15 days period of testing got expired I realized that something is missing in my dayly routine. So I spent my $18 and bought the Unibox.
What is really good:
- the idea of grouping by contact is great. Actually Apple has an attempt of grouping the threads, but it is half baked. This app works just great. You have the overall view of all the activity and can open the particular thread with a click - very convenient. Basically no need for search mostly.
- everything is in one window. Not sure it is very useful on big screen, but on notebook it is great. It takes a little to get used to it, as well as to the fact that long emails are not shown in full but with time you got use to it and I pesonally like it.
- filters - with new messages filter the Unibox essencially becomes a clear Inbox. Switching is fast and easy.
- the attachement view - you can see all the attachment related to a contact in one single place. I actually found some files that I was thinking missing.
- esthetically the app is very pleasant.
What can be made better:
- first of all the general remark: all Mail can do Unibox should do as well, than the transition to Unibox will be comfortable to everyone,
- the most important for me: when sending to group see the whole group in unibox, not individuals. I am frequently send messages to large groups of my co-workers so seeing all the recipients in the Unibox sort of kill the main idea of the app,
- default fonts, Rich Text per default, not too crucial, but good to have,
- multiple signature. I use the same email for both personal and business use, need different signatures,
- undo message delete (CTRL-Z)
- new message button in the body of the viewer is misleading, you can get used to it but I still try to push it when I need to start with clean new message, though the idea of starting a new thread with particular person instead of replying seems to be useful,
- ability of delete or reply from the notification pop-up window, it helps fighting spam without switching from the app you are currently using, it is implemented in Apple Mail and personally I use this option very frequently.
-to open or preview the attachment one should click on the name, clicking on the icon does not work
-cannot select the attachment using Ctrl key. Only using the Shift key to select all, so I cannot safe some particular subset of messages (or did not find how to do this).
Again, it is just the first update and I expect the program will become better with any new update. My list is not a “con list”, just suggestion to the developers how to make the app better. At the same time it is very useful even as it is now. I basically switched from using the Apple Mail almost completely.
After few months of using it:
- please improve the search to the level of native Mail,
- data, contact, map address recognition in the text and communication with corresponding program.
I am missing this features in Unibox that I got used in Mail. I have to switch to Mail if I need it and it makes Unibox not a universal mail client.
